The Butterfly Effect (2004)

This was a weird one.

All the way through watching it, I kept thinking:

"This feels slower than I remember."

"I don't remember this scene."

"Was it always this long?"

The last time I saw The Butterfly Effect was back in 2004. A mere 22 years ago. So it's entirely possible that my memory of the film has faded almost as much as Evan's (Ashton Kutcher).

For most of the film, I was enjoying the rewatch but couldn't quite work out why it felt different.

Then I got to the ending.

And suddenly everything made sense.

The ending was different.

Back when I saw this at the cinema, I remember Evan watching the home video of when he first met Kayleigh and deliberately saying horrible things to make sure they never became friends.

It was a sad ending, but it made sense to me.

Evan got to live a relatively normal life. Lenny was okay. Kayleigh and Tommy were able to grow up away from their abusive father. Nobody got everything they wanted, but everyone got a chance at something better.

The version I watched this time was the Director's Cut.

And blimey.

This ending takes things to a whole new level.

Instead of making a sacrifice later in life, Evan travels back to the womb and sacrifices himself before he's even born, effectively saving everyone else at the expense of his own life.

Even though I'd seen the film before, the ending completely caught me off guard.

I still prefer the theatrical ending.

It feels more in keeping with Evan's journey. Throughout the film he's constantly searching for a version of reality where everyone can be happy, including himself. The theatrical ending feels like the natural conclusion to that struggle.

The Director's Cut ending is certainly darker.

Much darker.

Regardless of which ending you saw, The Butterfly Effect remains a brilliant film.

It's clever, emotional, thought-provoking and built around one of my favourite movie questions:

What if?

5/5

Team America: World Police (2004)

It was racist when it came out, it's even worse now. I can't believe I watched this shit 1/5

Surviving Christmas (2004)

James Gandolfini AKA Tony Soprano totally makes this film. Without him this film would have been nothing. 3/5

The Football Factory (2004)

Great film! 3/5

The Football Factory (2004)

The scene where they are arguing at a kids football match makes this film. I could watch it over and over again 4/5

Primer (2004)

Primer has me confused.  I watched this film last night am I'm still struggling with the amount of alternate time-lines.  It's without a doubt a great film especially considering that the whole movie only cost $7000 to make.

p.s. this image below helps explain how the Box works. 4/5

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

This film is amazing but it will require a certain amount of suspension of disbelief.

Don't try and justify or understand it, just go with the ride and what a wacky ride it is. The cast is brilliant, the script is awesome and it makes the 70s seem kinda rad. 5/5

Dhoom (2004)

Not as good as I remember... It's cheesy, over the top and a bit surreal. I kind of enjoyed it. 2/5

Harold and Kumar Go To Whitecastle (2004)

Go to Whitecastle/Get the munches... Who cares? It's a great stoner film, brill cast and awesome moments. The perfect start to the Trilogy. 5/5

13 Going On 30 (2004)

Yawn 3/5

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Great film, was engrossed from the moment is started. Special FX is pretty good too. Typical story though.. The UK is buried under snow while America saves the day once again. 3/5

Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow (2004)

Visually Stunning, its quite obviously all green screen but after 10 minutes you soon learn to accept it as part of the film. It actually helps to make the film what it is.

I really enjoyed it but everything in my being tells me I shouldn't. It's a strange mix of retro and futuristic set in 1939 but there are some impressive technologies which are quite similar to the now dated Steampunk era, which was so popular a few years back.

Sky Captain without a doubt puts Captain America to shame.

I loved the huge robots, they really set the tone for the film along with the flying bird like ships. Unique and awesome.

I don't know, maybe I had a couple too-many Shandy's last night or I'm still half asleep but this was the perfect film to watch on a Sunday Morning after my Son woke me up at 5.45. 4/5

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

The second of the Tobey Maguire films starts off great, it's shows Peters human side where he's struggling with the mixed identities, trying to fit everything in and always disappointing someone. Even through this film is 8 years old I still get chills as spidey flys through manhattan, fantastic!

The film is quite obviously more polished then part one and Tobey is improved in his role as Spidey.

My favourite scene in the film is when Spidey is in an elevator with and a guy pops in, the scene captures the humour and awkwardness of the film perfectly.

Doctor Octavius is a formidable character who becomes even more-so after the initial incident. He's a believable villain, well in the context of the film anyway!

Overall, I loved this film it's awesome! 5/5
