Cloud Atlas (2012)

Simply fantastic.

Cloud Atlas is one of those films that's incredibly difficult to describe without sounding like you've completely lost the plot.

From the mind of Andy Wachowski, this is an ambitious, unique and wonderfully bonkers film that might just deserve to sit alongside The Matrix as one of his greatest achievements.

At first, I'll admit, I struggled.

The film jumps between multiple stories, multiple timelines and multiple versions of the same actors. For the first twenty minutes, I felt like I was trying to watch six different films at the same time.

But then something clicks.

Instead of dreading the next jump, you start looking forward to it. Just as one story gets interesting, the film throws you somewhere completely different. Past, present, future... then back again. Before long, you find yourself completely invested in all of them.

The cast is excellent throughout, and half the fun is spotting who's playing who. Some transformations are so convincing that I genuinely didn't recognise certain actors until long after the credits rolled.

One thing that surprised me was the humour. There's some wonderfully British comedy sprinkled throughout the film, and it actually works. That's something American filmmakers don't always get right, but Cloud Atlas manages it beautifully.

What impressed me most was the sheer ambition of the whole thing.

Most films are happy telling one story.

Cloud Atlas looked at that idea and thought, "Why not tell six?"

And somehow it works.

It's emotional, funny, thought-provoking and occasionally leaves your brain working overtime trying to connect all the pieces together.

The biggest compliment I can give it is this:

Days after watching it, I was still thinking about it.

Weeks later, I was still talking about it.

And even now, certain scenes still pop into my head unexpectedly.

That's usually a sign you've watched something special.

I loved it, and there's a very good chance it belongs on my all-time favourites list.

Much like the film itself, this review has probably jumped around a bit.

The difference is Cloud Atlas knows exactly where it's going.

5/5

Avengers Assemble (2012)

I can never get tired of The Avengers, it's gets better every time I watch it. Superb film one of my faves. Did I mention that the soundtrack is brill too? 5/5

Bloodsport (1988)

Its soooooo cheesy and yet brilliant, I can never get tired of this film. Van Damme is in his prime. Bolo is an awesome bad guy and totally makes this film what it is. OK! USA! 5/5

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011)

Still cheesy in typical MI style. It's my favourite of all the previous MI films. It's a role that seems to suit Tom Cruse. He should stick to it 3/5

Streetdance 2 (2012)

I enjoyed it, it is what it is, it's a dance movie. The acting is poor the story is simple but the dancing is superb. It's not trying to be anything other than that. 3/5

Limitless (2011)

I'll never ever get sick of Limitless, it's one of my all time favourite films. Bradley Cooper is awesome as usual. 5/5

Wreck-it Ralph (2012)

I really enjoyed Wreck It Ralph, it's fun, full of retro games and even a cameo from Zangief. Great film for Kids. 4/5

The Vow (2012)

John Cena and that guy who looks likes he was in X-Files 2/5

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)

Heartwarming film about old people who hate their families. Has its funny moments. M is weird, she didn't once mention MI5 or 007 but it was nice seeing Jaipur, not that I've ever been or have any desire of going. 4/5

The Departed (2007)

"Somebody get me a cwofee"

It's a good film and it makes more sense watching it a 2nd time. So many twists and turns. Great cast and some epic acting. Cwoffe! 5/5

Immortals (2011)

Wow, well in the true nature of Spartacus and 300, Immortals is awesome. The fight between the Gods and Titans was superb. Henry Cavill is brill and it's great to see him in a major role before Man of Steel later on this year. 4/5

Argo (2012)

"Argo F**k Yourself"

Wow, I can see why it's an award winning film. The 1st half is a build up to the intense ending. It's got an all star cast from Mr White from Breaking Bad, King Ralph, That guy that Rachel fancied in friends and that dodgy lawyer from Damages.

Who knew that Ben Affleck can act! 5/5
