My Deadpool trilogy begins with the one where Ryan Reynolds definitely, absolutely, 100% did not leak the original test footage so he could finally play Deadpool properly.
And I'm sure we'll all continue pretending that's what happened.
Having said that, as an origin story, Deadpool isn't too bad.
It's cheeky, ridiculous and violent, but in a good way. It doesn't feel violent just for the sake of being violent, like Kick-Ass sometimes did. Deadpool knows exactly what kind of film it wants to be.
Ryan Reynolds is basically perfect for the role, and after what happened to Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it's nice to see the character finally done properly.
There are so many pop culture references, fourth-wall breaks and jokes thrown at you that eventually some of them stop landing. It's almost like the film is constantly nudging you and asking, "Did you get that one?"
Still, it's fun, doesn't take itself remotely seriously and was something completely different for superhero films at the time.
It's just not the best of the trilogy.
But we've got two films to go...
