Triangle (2009)

Triangle Movie

My suspense season continues, and somehow Triangle gets better every time I watch it.

This was my third watch and I enjoyed it just as much as the first. In fact, I’d say it’s one of those films that actually improves with repeat viewings.

Most thrillers lose something once you know the twist.

Triangle does the exact opposite.

Even though I know what’s coming, I still find myself spotting new details, clues and little moments that I completely missed before. It’s the sort of film that rewards you for paying attention, then rewards you again when you watch it a second time.

And then a third.

What starts as a fairly straightforward mystery slowly turns into something much stranger. Just when you think you’ve worked it out, the film changes direction. Then it does it again.

And again.

Without giving anything away, Triangle has one of my favourite endings. Not because it’s shocking for the sake of it, but because it keeps unfolding long after you think it’s about to end.

Every answer seems to create another question.

Every revelation makes you rethink what you’ve already seen.

It’s clever, unsettling and memorable.

The real achievement is that it never feels complicated for the sake of being complicated. There’s a difference between a film that’s confusing and a film that trusts its audience, and Triangle sits in the second category.

By the end, you’ll either be reaching for a notebook to work everything out or immediately starting the film again.

Possibly both.

Just when you think it’s over, it’s only just beginning.
